We are delighted to have received the following message from the President of Finland:

The process of globalization has increased the interaction and interdependence between citizens and between states. There is no doubt that globalization has benefited many countries enormously. It has, however, also raised new problems. A timely example of this is the international economic crisis, which has set off a course of development that affects us all.

The weaknesses of the financial system must be corrected through international cooperation. We need fair globalization that focuses more on people. Our common aim is to ensure productive employment and decent work for all while striving for a balance between economic growth and social cohesion as well as the sustainable use of natural resources and the environment. The benefits of globalization must be shared more equally among and within nations.

The 2009 Progressive Governance Conference provides an excellent forum to share views and experiences to address the challenges posed by the financial crisis. I wish the conference every success and hope that you all will have a most fruitful and inspiring day.

Tarja Halonen
President of the Republic of Finland
